Case studies

Richard

As a junior doctor and progressing to eventually become a consultant anaesthetist, Richard enjoyed the status of being a senior medical professional. Early on in his fifties, and wanting to develop a second career, Richard realised that status would be important in any role he would consider. As someone used to performing public duties, an application to become a magistrate proved to be the key to opening up a new chapter for him.

Sarah

Having made a significant amount of money as a futures trader, Sarah retired in her early fifties and considered what to do next. Sarah had always enjoyed travel and embarked on several Far Eastern destinations that had been on her bucket list. What she realised after a year or two was that she enjoyed travel as a reward from her job in the City. Delving into her past, she recognised that she had a longstanding desire to do the right thing for the planet (long haul flights proving a dichotomy). She is now embarking on an Environmental, social and corporate governance training course to re-enter the world of finance from a 'more ethical' perspective.

Anthony

Working for an American oil firm had proved lucrative for Anthony, though his rise through the management structure had meant that he had become more distanced from his engineering roots. In his thirties, Anthony had bought a pendulum clock at an auction but inadvertently damaged the mechanism. Although never having attempted to repair a clock mechanism, Anthony was determined to restore the clock to full working order, which after some trial and error he was able to do.

Years later, and having sufficient funds to retire in his mid fifties, Anthony decided to set up an antique clock business and now repairs and restores around thirty clocks a year. A recent course in French polishing has ensured that the finished articles are in pristine condition.

David

David spend many years in the tile business, though for a long time he was deeply unhappy with his employer and working conditions. As a part time photographer, he decided to go into photography full time, and wanted to supplement his income by teaching at a local technical college. This didn’t work out in the way that he thought, but by chance came across another opportunity in tiles. This new company offered him the artistic freedom that wasn’t available at his earlier firm and he realised that it was the ability to express his creativity that truly gave him satisfaction
