As my working life progressed, I became more aware of colleagues approaching retirement. I also became aware that Iwould need to consider the next stage of my life and so I developed the process described earlier for myself. It took some focused effort to document my thoughts, but the benefits for me are tangible.

Over a period of two or three years, I kept revising and refreshing my interests, which fell quite neatly into either Leisure or Learning. Here’s my current list, in no particular order:

Learning: Architectural styles, Tudor history, Linguistics/use of English, Great lives, Japanese garden design, American pioneers, Cosmology

Leisure: Art Deco, cooking & sauces, Buddhism, designing & making one off things to solve practical problems, conversation, stocks & shares, book & film dialogue

A couple of examples that might show how step 5 works:

Linguistics – I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm and the pleasure of reading is to both enjoy the perspective of the characters invented by the author and the entertainment I find in well constructed prose. To that end, I’ve started buying secondhand hardback copies of my favourite books, some of which need to be repaired, which is also fun. I’m also planning to do a BA in Linguistics.

American Pioneers – I spent two years in Minnesota as a child. The state has many thousands of lakes, log cabins and artifacts from the 1800’s. The mystique of how the land was explored appealed to me when I was young, and that appeal has returned.

I now ensure that my time is focused primarily on investigating the Learning interests and developing/enjoying my Leisure interests. Whilst some time is always wasted, I’m taking my best shot at using mine so I will have the least regrets.
