It’s a disturbing thought that many people spend more time planning their holidays than their retirement.

Consider how your life has evolved – is it through design, chance or some combination of the two? And who has contributed to the design?

Getting to the stage in life where there is more time to explore opportunities, it’s worth putting effort into what shape the next decade or so could look like.

Of course, how people do actually spend their time can be overtaken by external events, but a simple consideration of the following can be revealing:

Neurons.jpg

•    Do you want to use the skills you have developed?

•    Do you want to do something different altogether?

•    Do you want to help others?

•    What sort of legacy do you want to leave?

•    Are you happy enough just stopping work and expanding your activities as they come along?

•    Some combination of the above?

The hard bit

Whilst we all have limited (if varying) amounts of time, it’s up to each of us as individuals to take responsibility for how our time is used. And that can be the hard bit. When asked what people ultimately want, the response is so often ‘to be happy’.

Happiness is defined by Paul Doolan (Happiness by Design) as:

the experiences of pleasure and purpose over time

Defining what experiences make you happy can be difficult. It’s easy to identify what makes people unhappy, but not so easy the other way around.

Design (the Rest of) Your Life

Same old thinking.jpg

Whilst products are often designed to solve practical problems, it is less usual to see designers provide solutions for how to live a life.

Consider how your life has evolved - is it through design, chance or some combination of the two. And who has contributed to the design?

Getting to the stage in life where there is more time to explore opportunities, it's worth putting some effort into what shape the next few years might look like. Designers spend time making prototypes, so designing some years should involve considering many possibilities before any decisions are taken. An established approach to this is:

  •    Gather & create

  •    Narrow down

  •    Chose

  •    Let Go & Move On

The Let Go & Move On bit is essential here - people spend time after making a choice thinking as to whether or not is was the right one. There's no way of knowing as you can't re-run your life, so just Let Go & Move On.

One way to begin this investigation is to consider the Three Life Options Strategy Quest

  •    (Sort of) Continuing the Life that you now have

  •    Reacting if something dramatic happened

  •    Deciding what to do if you came into some significant unexpected money

Values

And of course, the design needs to fit in with your values – have these changed over the years?
